Track Laying Basics: The “S” Turn Exercise

For the Orange Star Tracking Test, “the track must have at least one left and one right turn, each of
90 degrees. The turns will be made at an ordinary walking pace, i.e. no military “left-face” or “right-
face.” The order of the turn is at the discretion of the handler/tracklayer, and will be determined prior to
laying the track.”

Since the style of tracking we are practicing most closely simulates a police dog searching for dropped
evidence, and since in my 24 years of police experience I have never heard of a suspect doing a
military right or left face when fleeing the police, the turns will be made at a normal walking pace. Two
to three steps within the turn should be sufficient.

The turns should be introduced in a manner through the “S” turn exercise. A large “S” shaped track is
laid, in the manner of the straight tracks; the arcs will be gradually sharpened until they are true 90
degree turns. (Click to enlarge.)
