Track Laying Basics: Landmarks

The track map below has all the basic information as before, with an important addition: landmarks for
each leg have been noted. (Click to enlarge.)

With H.I.T. tracks, landmarks are not issues until tracks are aged to the point that the water has
completely evaporated. On warm days, or when tracks are laid later in the day, this can happen in
minutes. Trusting your dog's ability is essential; however, it is too early in the training process for that
to happen just yet. When beginning your track, pick a prominent terrain feature and note it on your
tracking log. Walk towards it as you lay your track. As you make your first turn, pick out another
prominent feature. Note it on your log when you are finished laying the track, or make notes as you
walk. This practice will help you to determine whether or not your dog is on the track, when you are
following tracks laid by others. Combined with the ability to observe the footsteps of a track, this will
also assist you in anticipating when a turn might be coming up.
