"I believe that the relationship between dog and handler is the most important aspect of training. Any
stress or conflict that is introduced into the relationship will adversely impact your training. My mission
is to provide the student with the tools to be able to train a dog to track for fun, as part of a competition
training program, or as an introduction to more advanced scent work disciplines."

Dave Port is the founder of The Way Of The Dog. He has been active in the sport of Schutzhund for
three and a half years. He became interested in positive reinforcement training methods as a means of
improving his dogs' performance, as well as improving his relationships with his dogs.

Dave studied martial arts as a young man, until chronic injuries forced him to stop. Upon taking up the
sport of Schutzhund, he soon realized that many students were left to their own devices to train in the
tracking phase. A martial arts-based training system was the answer. This allows the monitoring of
individual students' progress similar to the belt system employed by contemporary martial arts
instructors. The system also allowed more recognition of the student's efforts while pursuing titles for
their dogs (a time-consuming process; the average time to earn a Schutzhund 1 title is approximately
two and one half years).
