To earn the Blue Star, the student must complete the following requirements in addition to those for
the Red Star:

Reading

1. Obtain Mastering Variable Surface Tracking – The Component Training Approach (and the
accompanying workbook) by Ed Presnall. Read the introduction, and chapters 1-
3.

2. Fill out the training log for each training session. Present the training log for review.

3. Explain how the shaping process was used to train the article indication, and how the clicker might
be used to communicate with the dog while on the track.

Tracking Exercises

1. Hydration Intensified Tracking.

    a. A hydrated track (with food) of 255 paces in length (3 legs of 85 paces each), laid by the
handler, must be completed. No more than 45 pieces of food per leg may be used.

    b. The surface must be asphalt, grass, or dirt at the instructor’s choice.

    c. The track must have at least one left and one right turn, each of 90 degrees. The turns will be
made at an ordinary walking pace, i.e. no military “left-face” or “right-face.” The order of the turn
is at the discretion of the handler/tracklayer, and will be determined prior to laying the track. An
article must be placed halfway down the second leg, and another placed at the end of the track.
The articles must be made of different materials. The dog must indicate that it has found the
article by displaying a behavior trained by the handler    (i.e. sit, stand, down, etc.).

    d. The above track is to be aged for 20 minutes from the beginning of the preparation of the
    exercise.

    e. Document each tracking exercise.

2. Verify the tracking exercise for the Blue Star by video recording.
