To earn the Red Star, the student must complete the following requirements in addition to those for the
Orange Star:

Reading

1. Read and highlight (or annotate) Scent and the Scenting Dog by William Syrotuck, chapter 9 to
completion.

2.Fill out the training log for each training session. Present the training log for review.

3. List at least three general environmental factors that may affect a dog’s performance while tracking,
and at least three factors that specifically affect your dog’s performance.

Tracking Exercises

1. Hydration Intensified Tracking.

    a. A track (with food) of 225 paces in length, laid by the handler, must be completed. No more
than 75 pieces of food may be used. 80% of the placed food must be located.

    b. The surface may be asphalt, grass, or dirt at the handler’s choice.

    c. The track must have at least one left and one right turn, each of 90 degrees. The turns will be
made at an ordinary walking pace, i.e. no military “left-face” or “right-face.” The order of the turn
is at the discretion of the handler/tracklayer, and will be determined prior to laying the track. An
article must be placed at the end of the track. The dog must indicate that it has found the article,
by displaying a behavior trained by the handler (i.e. sit, stand, down, etc.).

    d. The above track is to be aged for 15 minutes from the completion of the preparation of the
    exercise.

    e. Document each tracking exercise.

2. Verify the tracking exercise for the Red Star by video recording.
