This is the introductory level to the training program. Terms, practices, and
philosophy will be discussed. The differences between training in a discipline and
treating behavioral issues will be addressed, and referrals to behavioral
specialists will be made if necessary. The student will become familiar with the
physical and mental skills necessary to begin training. Emphasis will be placed on
what behaviors can be observed, as opposed to what the dog may or may not be
thinking. The student will be given the skills to successfully train his or her own
dog, with the ultimate goal of earning a United Schutzhund Clubs of America TR-1
title. 80% fluency will be necessary to advance from one skill level to the next. To
earn the White Star, the student must complete the following requirements:

Reading

1. Read and highlight Scent and The Scenting Dog,  by William Syrotuck,
chapters 1-4.

2. Read and highlight the USA Rule book sections concerning the Schutzhund 1 /
TR-1 tracking exam.

3. Begin the training logbook. Fill out the training log for each training session.

Equipment

1. Obtain a common garden sprayer for use in hydrating your tracks in training.

2. Obtain a sturdy pair of shoes or hiking boots.

3. Obtain a 10 meter (33 ft.) tracking lead. (Make sure that this lead will not cut
your hands if the dog suddenly pulls against it.)

4. Obtain a treat bag for dispensing treats (nail pouch from home improvement
stores).

5. Obtain a flag for the start pad of the track (such as a sprinkler flag from home
improvement stores).
